Sighting Details

On the evening of 29th August 2013 Dan was at his house in Kingswinford. It was about 8.30pm. He glanced out of the window. It was a relatively clear night with only light cloud. Dan noticed two purple coloured lights in the sky to the East. They were moving slowly and appeared to be roughly circling each other.  It was hard to tell the exact distance of the lights but they were closer than the hill in the distance as he could see it behind them.

He called his partner to the window to also see the lights. She suggested they could be lasers hitting the cloud layer at first, but soon the lights moved away from the cloud to an area of clear sky. At this point the two lights separated. One of them started to descend. As it did it changed colour and became green. Then it began moving back up again and changed back to a purple colour. As it did this the other light continued to move around in a shaky circle.

The lights were visible for several minutes. Dan fetched his binoculars, but as he was trying to get one of them in focus both of the lights vanished from sight. Both him and his partner were very puzzled by what they had seen.

Sighting Analysis

The colours the lights were do not fit in with normal aircraft navigation lights, and due to the movement patterns observed it is unlikely that they were planes or helicopters. However at no time in the sighting did either of the objects perform any manoeuvres which would designate direct control or intelligence. This means they could have been lit objects drifting in air currents. They were unlikely to be Chinese lanterns, as these generally glow amber orange or yellow in colour.

The most likely explanation for the lights is that they were two colour changing LED balloons. These are electronically lit balloons which get caught on air currents and can be set to change colours randomly or at regular intervals. Perhaps they had been launched from a celebration somewhere and were drifting up into the sky. As the lights were distant we cannot say what they definitely were, and there is the possibility that they were something more unusual. But the most logical explanation is that they were LED balloons, which drifted out of sight after several minutes.

Unfortunately the witness has not responded to further enquiries so this is the only information we have at present about this intriguing case.
